Artist Statement
My work is about exploring relationships between common, utilitarian materials, used for such things as: repairing, building, destroying, protecting, covering, insulating, displaying, writing/mark making, while subverting their basic everyday functions by reducing the material and process to the point of critical juncture. Interventions with these materials and the reduction of process is critical to seeing how far I can manipulate and work within the classifications of drawing, collage, painting, sculpture, installation, and performance-based art.  I try to step out of the way most of the time when working in a reduced method, and act as an intermediate force between the material and the process and concept. I want to allow the materials to be excessive, self referential, in flux, intervene, disrupt, activate, challenge the material thresholds that are present for making shape, and new forms. I’m interested in the way that objects relate to humans, how materials shape form, how form shapes our perception of function, and how humans relate back to objects.
