Artist Statement

My practice addresses our relationship to time, scale and the environment through permeable, processbased interactions with sites and materials. I work across drawing, photography and installation to consider human impact within broader expanses of time and networks of life, capturing points of interaction within phenomena or between human and non-human bodies in space. Each of these forms has roots in a long-standing drawing practice, whether I make a mark, a collective makes a mark, or a mark is found.

Site-specificity is integral to my practice, with projects often arising from a hybrid of research and physical engagement in place. Chosen processes are responsive to or generated by both natural and manmade phenomena within a given location, spanning from geologic and atmospheric forces to historic forms of land use, labor and knowledge production in relation to sites and materials. These locations and processes are recorded, emulated, or “mapped” in various ways, cataloging ephemeral interactions in time or the physical traces that remain.

Artist Bio / CV

During 2012/13, Raintree was an Artist-in-Residence through Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Program and Visiting Artist at NYU, with the Department of Art and Art Professions. Forthcoming, she will be in residence at Frans Masereel Centrum (Belgium) in the spring of 2014. She has also exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and has had solo shows at Foley Gallery (NY) and Reynolds Gallery (VA). She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Mildred’s Lane (2011), Atlantic Center for the Arts (2010), Vermont Studio Center (2009), Big Cypress National Preserve (2006) and Rocky Mountain National Park (2005).
