Artist Statement

My work is constructed from ink and paper. Paper is shaped, pieced together, layered, and cut through. The ink is applied in a multiplicity of marks, lines, drips and dots. Ink and paper converge to define a new space and structure. There is no hierarchy between an ink line, cut line, or the wrinkling of the paper. The physicality of the paper, the image depicted, and the evidence of the process, work together to tell a story.

The story told is about a new understanding of architecture: an architecture without walls, an architecture of emotion. Inhabiting a place in my imagination, I begin laying down lines. The construction is an unstable and ever evolving sequence of transformations. When working directly with ink on paper, there is no room for correction, the drawings forever bare every step or the origination process. This alla prima approach, along with feeling architecture, are the two most vital components in my work. The relationship between them is nonhierarchical, open and dynamic. They call and respond to each other and the work takes on its own momentum. I need only to be quiet and pay attention.
