Artist Statement

The drawings here represent the most direct looking that I do, so that they are to some degree, a journal of my travels and locale, whether I am looking out the window of my apartment, walking down the streets of Brooklyn, or traveling in Spain. This series began during my residence at the Valparaiso Fundación, Spain in January 2008. I was  able to ship only a few supplies there and chose what I brought carefully, so that the 5”x 8” sketchbook became my way of walking through the foreign, scruffy, sun drenched Mediterranean vegetation, decompressing from the four classes I had just taught in NYC. My reading of Merlau Ponty’s phenomenology - years ago- resurfaced as a way to connect with saturated moments of time and the particularity of standing and being. The landscape felt overwhelmingly expansive, yet temperamentally aligned to my native mark making; as to the drawings I had looked at before I left, namely Van Gogh’s accutely descriptive mark making and Marden’s calligraphic structures.

Since my return to New York City, I have continued to ‘sketch’ and various broad themes have emerged from the themes of mountains, trees, and still-life themes of the Fundaciòn; such as flowers, working people and construction sites, master’s copies, and my daughter sleeping. Because I am primarily a still life painter, these drawings, which I now want to feel under my hand - often, have brought a much needed sense of investigation. They are at once, a feeling of being free to say whatever is in the moment, a record of my ongoing preoccupation with art as a translation of experience, and a release from the problematics of color; so that while the drawings are investigatory,  I think they should be shown and seen. They are really a way of feeling alive in the moment and opening up to finding the multiple significations of ongoing motifs.
