Artist Statement
I exploit the allure of color and depth, pattern and invented spaces to engage an audience in works that are aggressively introspective.  My newest paintings depict invented creatures that are closely related to echinoderms, gastropods, and arthropods. Empathizing with unassuming forms of life to provide metaphors for human experience reflects my skepticism of the achievements of humanity.  Yet even this self-effacement reinforces the unavoidability of egocentrism. The escapist tendencies in my other-worldly vignettes expose fundamental weaknesses in the human psyche.  The parallels to human existence serve always to underscore life’s inexorabilities.

This past year, I have been "breaking my paintings open,” inventing landscapes by teasing out the illusion of depth from flat shapes.  The entities that populate my paintings usually have small humps that could be noses or nipples; whether or not they have arms depends on whether they are reaching out to something.  Rarely do we see their mouths, but when we do, they are wide open.  The spaces they occupy are varied.  Some suggest underground dwellings, others grounded landscapes, while many are beyond gravity. Within the invented landscapes, forms that, in my hard-edged work, would be swollen to bursting, are now springing leaks.  Colors flow into one another, often as if they were liquid metal.  My underlying interest in imagery of water and waves has surfaced in these paintings, adding to a fluidity of forms and space that allows for fluid transformation as I develop the painting.  More importantly, I am making myself more vulnerable and allowing more of my personal experiences to flow into the works.
