Artist Statement

Art and Autobiography

(GERMAN FLICKER)

Art is what makes life more interesting than art. My art and my biography are inextricable. After having spent almost half of my lifetime afar from my German fatherland and outside the syntax of my German mother tongue, it seems important to me in this age of a presumably globally available catalogue of references, to address issues of origin, of cultural determination.

 (...)

Currently I am working on a series of large-scale drawings pretending to be film posters. These fake posters I am planning a series of a dozen refer to fake films on German identity, history and present affairs. All is made up, but all deals with “reality“. I try to reconsider received patterns of reading myths and propose to link the communal to the intimate, using iconic imagery and my private archive. The “film“ may then appear on the beholder's inner eye, provoked by the poster and developed by one's knowledge, by one's own assumptions and prejudices.

(...)

Each poster drawing is made in its specific and unique manner, by geometrical ordering, the partial use of color, cross hatching... But why film posters? Because they allow me to fuse (and thus to enhance) my attention to those questions of cultural identity with my love for drawing (rather the marks on paper than the pure line), my obsession with words and languages, and my attraction to cinema; cinema, as a Gesamtkunstwerk, allowing to unite the previous with the element of sound.

(...)

My poster drawings are silent, they play with acoustic allusions within the German idiom, and call upon the rumors of collective and intimate references. When I read and hear the words, when I see them be part of the poster “collage“, they make me belong to a community of fate, despite my own desire to maintain the myth of my free will and self determination.
