Artist Statement

For me, art is a vital, ever-present exploration. I aim to better understand--and to spur the viewer to question and to seek--the essential structure of things...of being.

As an artist, my method of working remains consistent: I work with focused concentration on a specific project where the ideas direct what media I use. Research is key to all of my creative endeavors while I remain a prolific maker of things. Drawing and writing (which to the Balinese is the same act and process--even the same word) are the foundation of my working process.

My practice is a quiet contemplation. A careful (care-filled) dialogue. I slow down and question when I create. I hope that what I make causes the viewer to do the same.

Artist Bio / CV
Born in 1974, Shea Hembrey grew up in rural Hickory Grove, Arkansas. Though a recent project is his first work involving ornithology, his early fascination with birds led him to become a licensed breeder of migratory waterfowl with the U.S. Department of the Interior as a teenager. As a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar to New Zealand, he studied Maori art for a transformative year that redefined how he understood art. Since that time, he has lived across the U.S.-- from Alaska to Connecticut-- busily researching and creating art projects. His broad and varied academic background includes an M.F.A. from Cornell University.
