Artist Statement

Josh Thorson is an artist and writer who lives and works in New York City. In his videos and writing, he uses themes such as consciousness, science, religion, love, and the virtual in an exploration of the subjective exchange that takes place in storytelling. In his video designs for collaborative theater projects, Thorson strives to use video linguistically, as if the projections were another actor or character in the performance. His drawings tend to depict objects more simply;
and his most recent drawings are about the pleasure of every day objects and
their translation into the formal. Thorson has an MFA from Bard College and a Ph.D. from the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research interests include narrative video art, narrativity in storytelling and representation, radical empiricism, queer and feminist film and video cultures, and the history of video technology.
