Artist Statement
Island Me

In this series, Island Me, I examine the possibilities of creating a tension between concrete forms and expressive elements by means of a charcoal drawing.
This recent series explore the formal and conceptual potential of charcoal. I like the power and directness of this medium. Charcoal allows me quick modifications reflecting the speed of thoughts and ideas. It is really not complicated to change a dark area into a white one and vice versa creating the multiple layers that make up the drawings. Charcoal is a fertile medium to develop my visual thinking on paper setting up a complex network of lines, forms and structures. The chosen forms and patterns are put together to build up a powerful language, which triggers multiple associations.
For me drawing is a very personal process based on intuition and the interaction of one’s daily life. It is a way of perception, an inspiring process of exploration and discovery.
I am focusing on the conflicting relationship of a threatened environment and a decay of architectural forms. The resulting drawings reflect fictive landscapes, which oscillate between abstraction and figuration.

Synapsale Nachbilder (Synapsal Afterimages)

The series Synapsale Nachbilder (Synapsal Afterimages) is intended to be formal. The drawings build up a linear structure suggesting architectural spaces. Those seem almost as ungraspable as the after-images of spectral outlines on our retinas that form with our eyes closed, depicting something real, but not allowing it to reach a recognizable form. They appear as a reminder of something that we cannot quite remember. The drawings are at the same time placed like virtual anchors in our world that is drifting apart.

They portray the ambiguity of life at large, showing its fragility and uncertainty of our contemporary world, where conditions can change abruptly.
