Artist Statement
Formlessness does not exist

A drawing by A. van Campenhout is all about space and light and the gaps in between. So he does not have a real subject for his drawing, actually. And of course, that is the way a drawing comes into being. There is an empty space in the form of a piece of paper, a space which in itself is a gap between light and space. It is a gap, however, which you can take into your hands, and on which you can put something. Usually, Van Campenhout does this with a stick of charcoal. This black stick is what he draws, transforming the three-dimensional essence of the instrument into the flat plane, imbuing the latter with depth that way.

A. van Campenhout’s drawings do not feature any recognizable representations. They are reflections of the light coming in from outside. You do not exactly recognize what you see, but you visualize it for yourself. The drawings are independent figurations in the form of apparitions. Something is coming to light: it is pitch-dark and, in order to find your way around, you have to go by touch, be guided by your senses.

Every drawing is a victory over the limitations of observation. An artist taking visible reality as his starting point, will draw what he sees, drawing the front only. For the back is supposition, mainly. The Dutch writer K. Schippers once aptly remarked that, when one sees the front of something only and not the back, one just has to assume it is there. That is exactly what A. van Campenhout shows us in his drawings. He imagines what this back side may look like, and this does not tally with our suppositions. He shows us something else.

It becomes clear that formlessness does not exist. Everything keeps changing. Every finished drawing continues to vibrate. Van Campenhout draws the gaps between light and dark. The light slips by and that has been incorporated in the drawing without it being apparent. Everything may be labelled –dot, line, plane, stain, smudge, stroke– but at the same time, nothing is literal. You keep wondering about what has been drawn there.

Alex de Vries (1957) is an author and consultant. He writes, among other things, on artists and arts policy.
