My practice examines the possibility of making drawings that exist between a plan or diagram and a trace or object. The pieces suggest the process of working out an idea, as well as the impossibility of pinpointing the moment of this occurring. They straddle their function with their making; their utility with their poeticism, their tactility with their flatness, so that they embrace a handled and manipulated touch, and yet also display some method of process that allows an unfolding of making and meaning to occur.
Recognizing that the work considers time and material in relationship to an idea or representation locates my interests in the practices and visual vocabulary of certain minimalist and post-minimalist artists, as well as a significant moment in burgeoning feminist practices that embraced a radicality through subtle formal moves.
Perpetually oscillating between notions of interior and exterior, infinite and finite, I also repeatedly return to a notion of a doubling or echo. I am motivated by the desire to blur the understanding between original or source and copy or record, an argument I see embedded in the very act of making drawings. The notion of the uncanny as related to its original connection to the connotations of the home, or outside-of-home; a sense of familiarity within the unfamiliar and vice versa, is also evident throughout my work. These themes permeate my practice and raise the question of what it means to re-present an idea or object, taken from one surrounding dimension and repurposed into another.
