Artist Statement

My artwork explores the divide and points of intersection between the natural world and built environment. Over the past ten years I have worked in the fields of architectural and landscape design in addition to pursuing my art practice. These disciplines have come to influence my artwork, adding living plants as a building material. My most recent installation (a collaboration with a landscape designer) operates between being a discrete sculptural object and a landscape, continually in flux. This artwork is able to frame and call the viewer’s attention to an actual, ongoing cycle of nature: inside a 15’ diameter enclosed space a seeded mound of topsoil evolved into a lush wildflower meadow over the course of several months.

My series of cut paper ‘drawings’ begins with intricate tracings of photographs taken in different seasons over a period of years in a forest in upstate New York. These artworks depict a filtered and idealized vision of nature as seen in the mind’s eye at the moment of experiencing the landscape. In this way, I’m able to transform complex three-dimensional images of nature into topographies of both vision and memory.
