Artist Statement

Statement

As one expression of my engagement with environmental projects, my paintings and drawings are about time and where we humans fit into this present moment. In light of climatic change, I think of oysters as first responders in environmental cleanup, and oyster middens as first defenders of our coastlines.

I also choose the oyster as subject matter for the pure pleasure of returning to gesso and charcoal as the appropriate mediums with which to draw out the textures and intricacies of oyster shells. To those basic shapes, examined one by one or in groups, I bring references to oyster farming, Blue Willow pottery, and the jewel tones of Neruda’s Piedras del cielo.
