Artist Statement
For five years I’ve created the Estuary Series exploring natural processes observed in local wetlands, including flow and sedimentation patterns and tidal cycles.  The series relates processes in nature with physiological processes in the body. The Pourings begin with a drawing in acrylic ink on mylar. Water poured onto the drawing obliterates some of the line, floating and moving the pigment to create puddles.  As the puddles dry they make their own drawings with evaporation lines.   The drawings in the Inner Pourings track the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid inside my head.   The Mud Paintings are a combination of drawings, pourings and finger painting using mud, sand and raw pigments.  These are all inspired by the tidal mud flat patterns in Drakes Estero. I’m fascinated by the tides’ relationship to the movements of the earth and moon.  I began the Pendulum series as a way to study gravity-driven cycles using beach stones as pendulums.   As a drawing meditation I followed the path of the stone with a pencil on paper. This expanded into an audience-interactive piece that kids loved: following the pendulum by drawing with a finger in sand. The most recent pendulums are overturned glass bottles filled with sand or salt pouring out of a pinhole.  The audience member can move and swing the pendulum to create her drawing. The Water and Time series began as a study of water patterns in a circular bowl – as a model for the worlds’ oceans and their circular current patterns.  Stop action images were collected from video footage, and these stopped images were drawn and assembled into a series of 40 images – Water and Time (Stop).  These then became the palette for the Water and Time (Go) pieces – drawn in pastel using only lines lifted from the Water and Time (Stop) pieces.
