Artist Statement

I am developing a multi-media body of work that includes a series of paintings, quilts,  sculptures and performances.  The subject matter for this work centers around the life and death of my father.  I approach this subject using the formal qualities of abstraction with elements of symbolism to give form to collective truths through my own personal experience.

My quilt work, a new medium for me, is done as a memorial to my father.  All of the fabric used to make the quilts comes from his clothing.  I have made three quilts thus far and intend to make possibly twenty in total.  My original interest in quilts surfaced as inspiration for abstract, pattern-based painting.  Now that I am actually making quilts, the patterns and methods of quilt construction are influencing my painting in a direct, informed manner and are solving many formal problems I have faced as a painter.

Strangely, it has been this experience of stepping out of a fine-arts medium and into that of quilt-making that has opened up my work to other media and conceptual possibilities.  From the making of quilts and thinking about the idea of memorials I have begun creating sculpture and planning performances.  This work does not follow the formal lineage of my painting and quilt work but it picks up on the ideas of time, memory and tradition generated by the desire to memorialize figures and moments of significance.

In my two recent sculptural installations I have experimented with live, growing elements such as wheat grass and sunflowers and I would like to expand upon the use of these elements. I find the color, strength, determination and fragility in the living plants to be a refreshing contrast to wood and metal.
