Artist Statement

My studio practice is very much informed by my training as a poet and writer. Recently, I realized that what I do in or with a space is much like what I did (and do) in my notebooks--generate clusters; erase words; find interesting proximities; add, subtract; write over things. I put clusters in conversation with each other; make the absences as present as the visually apparent. I make spaces (stanzas) where unexpected friction occurs. Viewers have to seek out their own paths and routes between various movements, materials and desires. The environments and objects that I make create a sense of foreignness or of being a foreigner in one’s own country. What is of great interest to me is the point at which a thing is both itself and becoming something else and much of my work deals with objects and information in limbo. To me this sense of foreignness is crucial both to the artistic practice and to our human experience. In my varied artistic practice, writing, installation, drawing, documentation, performance and sculpture come together to transform space into a kind of dysfunctional guidebook.

As of late, I have become particularly fascinated by the idea of producing “rerites,” a project that takes its cue from a fascinating line I came across in Lewis and Clark’s Journals from 1804: “I am much engaged reriting.” Obviously, this word refers to the entries Clark kept, but it also seems to make reference to Lewis and Clark’s broader culture venture—recording, cataloguing, acculturating. I have been increasingly interested in realizing this idea of "reriting" as it addresses erasure, memory, and “reriting” both as artistic process and political agenda.
