Artist Statement

For most of my life my sole focus has been making sculptures. Often I would be asked if I drew the images or ideas and how and it always surprised them and myself that I didn’t really make drawings as a way to get to my sculptures. It is only recently in the last 3 years that this has changed almost 180 degrees to the point where I am now making sculptures/things to help realize drawings. A huge change in my practice began 3 years ago when I started trying to make sculptures out of fabric instead of wood. I spent a great deal of time sewing images and surfaces out of pieces of fabric that were then wrapped around things or expanded by being stuffed. 2 years ago I realized I was way more obsessed and invigorated by the images and surface part and my sculptures began to flatten out and wound up hanging on the walls surrounding me. For me in some ways they are still like making sculpture in that I am picking material for its particular qualities such as color, texture, and sheen and building with it by attaching one piece to another putting one on top or under another in a very similar way I put pieces of wood, plaster, and metal together. These aren’t really sculptures though and feel like tapestries, quilts, fabric collages, and some even say like painting. But they aren’t and in the end I have thought of them, with friends and peers agreement as fabric drawings.
