Artist Statement
Subtle similarities of growth and decay are the main beginning points of my current paintings and drawings. Overlapping subject matter of emotional, political and environmental concerns are reflected in multiple layers of imagery. Tangled matter mimics both natural and technological development and desiccation. Imagery shifts from delicate and intricate to aggressive and invasive.

Organic and loose forms of patterns emerge. Having been raised in the Saviano tribe of Papua New Guinea, Sepik style patterning, tattooing and carved line-work influences much of my artwork. Stylistically, the work is a combination and juxtaposition of Sepik traditions, current design trends and many forms of drawing.

Found objects or ephemera are often starting points for my work and include deteriorating or jumbled plant-life, mold and rust formations, meandering shadows, broken electronics and wiring. Found objects are collected and brought back to the studio, photographed or sketched on-site. When people are incorporated into the imagery I pay careful attention to quiet expressions, understated gestures, wrinkles, tattoos and scars. Layers of transparency in drawing and painting allow for multiple views of observation to merge into one work.
