Artist Statement

This body of work is a continual exploration of interpreting the story and icon of the "Gingerbread Man" through my invented chracter the "Gingerblack Man."  The Gingerblack Man acts as the consciusness of African-Americans.  The artwork is a narrative of connections and disconnections one has with themselves and the world around them.  Each painting is linked to each other like a timeline or Genesis of how one thought or action can create different realities.  The work speaks on how society shapes identity on the basis of assumptions and accusations.  While incorporating pop culture, history, technology and "cookie-cutter" mentality, the art opens the viewer to confront issues of imagery, stereotypes, and the the social poltical realities of chasing the American deam.
