Artist Statement
I am interested in the flattening of time, narrative and patterns in drawing. I use objects from my daily life, things on my desk, in my mail, outside my window. Sifting through stacks of books on history, nature, art, architecture and comics, I combine still-life with historical and cultural references. My drawings move forward in a contrapuntal process that seeks a fugue-like visual arrangement that is both delicate and reckless. In this melee of competing marks and blocks, the relationship of the elements of the drawing are in flux. The loose geometry of overlapping, intersecting lines redefine foreground and background and force a reconsideration of the object represented. 3-dimensional objects drawn in 2-dimensions find themselves undermined by dividing lines and reversals of positive and negative space. With pencil I construct an alchemical schoolyard textbook brew of the past, the present, the inanimate and the symbolic.
