Artist Statement

People are influenced by places, architecture, nature and objects. In another part of the world, we become different people with different thoughts. The world of our interiors is human-made, constructed to carry different historical, social and emotional messages. All this triggered my initial interest into the effect of social and emotional dimensions of spaces, as well as the extents in which our surroundings are culturally determined.

With tape, most of times of red or black colour, I draw on the walls of spaces. The tape-drawings are site-specific installations, made for the specific dimensions and atmosphere of a space. They display objects and spaces, abstracted forms seen in reality in the manner of systems of grids. Arching and hanging pieces of tape simulate electricity cables and other devices. As metaphor, they speak about the theatre-like nature of the installation and of the object of its depiction, reality itself. In fact the play of interpretations allowed by the material presence of the Tape Drawings echoes the process of perception it involves –only one at the time can be perceived the tape drawing and the space it dramatizes. The tape drawings seem to hover along the walls as if holding no physical contact with them.

When I abstract the realm of real objects (for instance home interiors), I am actually trying to invite people to think about the way they perceive (themselves, others and the relation between objects and the space that surround them). The delineation of objects also allows to come to a new awareness of the space they give shape to. A tape-line separates different areas from each other. In this way the wall seems to cover the ability to transform into mass, emptiness and objects.

At first I was drawing on sheets of paper. However, my drawings gradually expanded to several sheets.  In fact I didn’t want anymore to present viewers with a representation of a space but I wanted to draw them inside this very space with life size dimensions. The tape drawings were born from the impulse of turning reality itself into a world of depiction instead of merely depicting reality.
