Artist Statement

Hyunkyoung Shin Hur

My work is a process toward a light. It became my travel how I see/understand my reality. My self-awareness in finding a way to free myself from the yoke-a chain rules strengthened more and more in the course of the denial. In so doing I found that it was myself and my own obsession that had continuously restrained me. I began with analysis of my conflict and confronted my inner problems. Such inner travel was leading to see other people. I wanted share our sufferings in real terms and attempt to soothe our pains with my works.

While the exploration of the new world gave me a joy of freedom it also gave me a hard time in finding a right direction. Even when I appeared in my works to overcome the boundary and limits set in society, myself existing in reality was struggling. I tried to dissolve the stiff cores of my frustration and hard struggle throughout the procedure and to reawaken my dream sleeping somewhere for a long time.

Ironically, it was my strength hitherto unknown to me but believed to have built along the line of tradition that afforded me greatly needed support.

I followed what my nature led and I drew the images of myself sometimes flying high in the air and sometimes falling down. But an estrangement between idea and reality developed. My ever growing concern for social issues called for another denial- denial of a certain part of my life. My point of view towards the society where I belong made me take up more active stance. I do like my work to communicate with the audience how they were produced and to share my feeling with them. Even though I am concerning to express my thought I make my art works easy and fun. To communicate with people my works should be easy, I am using image and text, and for fun, the audience will be allowed to touch the works by themselves-open books, pull out a drawer or put on the light. And art is my life.
