Artist Statement
My work explores light, space, and structure through shifting color interactions.  I begin with either a solid or gradated field of color, and activate it with repeating marks of varying, contrasting hues.  As the relationships between the top levels of marks and ground colors change, illusions of glowing light, layers of space, and volumetric roundness emerge.

The color variations I work with range from strikingly contrasting to  barely perceptible.  I am especially interested in the “jnd”, or just noticable difference, between colors, the threshold at which one notices two hues as distinct, though their similarity makes even a sharp edge between them appear faint.  These subtle color shifts imbue my work with a sense of light, atmosphere, and vibration.

I structure each piece along a grid, whose crisp lines remain visible behind the overlapping lozenges of color.  The interplay of a geometric system with a sense of organic, shimmering light anchors the work while allowing it to breathe.

Underlying my work is a concern with perception, with how the eye and mind process visual experience, often in surprising ways.  The same color can look quite different in two parts of the same piece.  Moreover, illusions of three-dimensional, rounded forms emerge from configurations of straight, linear marks.  Although it is clear to see how each mark was laid down, and thus how each piece was made, something enigmatic remains in the combination and cohesion of elements.  In this way, my work makes viewers aware of the mystery and complexity of seeing.
