Artist Statement

I work in a wide variety of media, among them charcoal, oil, torn paper, wood, wire, plaster, and found materials. I also work with solar etchings of my larger charcoal drawings. I prefer materials with a rich physicality: the lush smoky texture of charcoal, the sharp tangles and loping catenaries of steel wire, old wood or metal worn by use into rough shapes.

My work is figurative. I deal largely with solitary figures alienated from mainstream society, such as bluesmen or displaced persons. My concerns are line and time. I am engaged by the process of pulling line out of these disparate media, and seek to carry this line beyond two dimensions, by drawing through space with wire and tubing or by incorporating time.

I seek to conflate time and line: to represent the evolution of a line, to draw as if being drawn. I envision the blunt gnarled movement of roots reaching down through soil toward some fundamental structure, or the rhythm of days overlaying earlier days like marks on paper lie over earlier marks, altering and eventually obscuring them. I think of the tangling of neurons in my mother’s brain as she descended into Alzheimer’s disease and see them as a network of lines which were the paths of her life, shortcircuited now and making unorthodox connections between today and sixty years ago, inviting her to move freely throughout the time of her life before they blacked it all out.

I recently made a charcoal animation about my mother and her five sisters, all of whom eventually developed Alzheimer’s, thus bringing the subject of time into real time. Words moved across the screen, the women moved into the picture and, one by one, departed; but the evidence of their passage remained behind.
