Artist Statement
Architecture imposes geometry on nature, creating and defining non-natural spaces that are inhabited, at least for a time, by individuals and communities. I am interested in what defines a “sense of place”, how we move through and negotiate our relationship to place, and by extension, to each other. Buildings and their surrounding  environments carry the memory of their creation and cause us to question our cultural identities and our own locations in time.

I am particularly interested in how vernacular architecture world- wide has a certain simplicity of detail but a richness of humanity. Typically the international structures we see have a masculine profile, and it is not until we enter a building that we get a sense of a feminine imprimatur. However this is not the case in nomadic architecture, in which the woman is the primary producer and user of domestic structures.  In some of the recent works on paper I juxtapose “masculine” structural forms, frequently inspired my own or others’ photographs, with the more “feminine” elements of nomadic structures.  I enjoy the contrast of permanence and temporality that these relationships present. There is also an ambiguity of time and place, as questions of point of view and perspective seem to shift.  I am interested not only in the cultural contrasts and similarities of shelters and communities throughout the world, but in those constant and migratory transformations, as evidenced by the myriads of repetitive marks that make there way through the spaces of my work.
