Artist Statement

This work stems from years of drawing conjoined twins and maimed figures.  I was first interested in drawing their shapes and negative spaces- they were formally so beautiful and unique to me.  Over time their images led to questions on the dynamic of their relationships; their quality of life was completely dependent on how they chose to function together.  How individuals relate to each other truly determines every aspect of their lives. I'm now interested in what shapes and forms these relationships, specifically the moments in which a successful balance is created. Every dynamic seen in our personal relationships can be explained more clearly through examples seen in nature, which helps to explain the balances.  Using a group of physically or mentally disfigured subjects, I use these drawings to observe successful and failed attempts in various symbiotic relationships.
