Artist Statement

I draw to seize what surrounds me, to take my time to look, to hold on to what I saw - or what has seen me. I try to prevent the loss of time, to fix unsettled moment elsewhere that in memory, to keep it alive longer. My research does not preserve the moment but refreshes it.

The location imports less than the sensation of the place.
Wherever I’m in the world, I’m an explorer of a territory: that of tiny sensations.
I question the usual, the common, the immediate sensitive space, that we no longer see, in which we live without thinking. I need to note, annotate, write, describe, decompose, flatten, mark out, draw what I see, what affects me, what shocks me, what touches me. Waking up, getting up, dressing up, sitting down, writing, looking at a hand, touching hair, strolling, lying down, the wind, the sun, the sea, a bed, a tent, a bag, a flower.
Trying to explain how, when, why all this?

My artwork is drawing as an experience. It is to find astonishment.

Artist Bio / CV

The experience of a location is central in Réjane Lhôte’s work.
Rejane draws spaces she explores.
By questioning the mundane, the day-to-day, the simple, the discreet, the furtive,
she tries to hold time by seizing the moment, to embrace a territory by wandering about. Réjane Lhôte’s practice is multi-form: she paints on paper thin colored inks constrasting
with rhythmical marks, she punctuates with words the pages of her sketchbooks, she embroiders old fabrics, she knits maps, she collects memories. Lhôte intertwines daily life and locations, pushes aside the expected, scratches cracks, looks for imbalance to understand better and encircle the everyday. Her work is drawing as an experience of life.

Réjane Lhote is a Paris-based artist. Born in France, she has lived in the USA.
Since graduating from l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Réjane has obtained grants and artist-in-residencies in France, Spain, China and India.
