Artist Statement

I am simultaneously developing two separate bodies of work. While the content of both bodies of work is seemingly quite different, the methods of working that I use are constant. My process and the resulting images are a result of exploration into the unknown in order to find something that will inherently be unique because the process is personal and intuitive. My intention is that the work will raise feelings and associations but cannot be read literally. I believe this taps into the unique strengths of art – to communicate viscerally.

“Phantom Limb Series” examines the destructive effects of aspects of our society and culture on the individual. By making drawings on a very small scale, I ask the view to engage in an intimate dialogue that takes them out of their routine habits of distancing themselves from that which requires emotional investment. Because these drawings are figurative and show sensitivity to the humanity of the forms, there is a quality of empathy and pathos that is communicated in this works.

In series entitled “Psychotecture”, I use my love of materials to create a surface that is soft and delicate but which allows me to print, draw and paint and then carefully sand back into the surface in a cyclical manner. While the process is intuitive, the imagery is cerebral and uses the language of architectural drawing to create a sense of order. In these works, I marry materials and process with a distinctive visual language to produce imagery that uses shape, line and tone to create a sense of structural unity and visual balance.
