Artist Statement
My work consists of drawings which I bring together in installations. When drawing, I use many different artistic strategies and methods. I copy existing works of art, draw free-hand and I project photocopies and cut-out shapes. I am also particularly interested in the use of historical instruments, like the 19th century camera lucida. In exhibitions I juxtapose strategies rather than drawings in the more traditional sense of the word. Presentation is thus a crucial part of the work. In the past few years my interest shifted from drawing as a goal in itself, to the use of drawings in spatial stagings which became the actual works. Instead of depicting space I am now using drawing to create space.

During this shift of interest, a place was created for more mundane activities to become part of my work, like collecting, reading and experimenting with materials. Actually, all side-tracks that I had always developed purely for myself, became the very core of my practice. For example, my recent work A New Method started with a series of copies of drawings from a homonymous 18th century manual for how to use ink blots when drawing landscapes, by the English draughtsman Alexander Cozens. It served as a starting point to look into historical change related drawing techniques. Although my installations suggest to be the result of study related activities, I do not intend to present knowledge as such. Rather, with the materials I bring together I want to suggest rather than represent meaning. I am interested in finding a moment in which it is unclear whether meaning is a quality of the work or a projection of the viewer. Creating a moment in which the activity of assigning meaning is impeded, as some sort of a state limbo, is for me the very essence of what drawing can do.
