Artist Statement

My work focuses on the enigmatic nature of optical experience and the elusiveness of memory.

Found historical portraits, stark landscapes and SX70 Polaroids inspire these drawings. Discrete moments of analog imprecision are often singled out and amplified, borrowing heavily from overexposed snapshots, negatives, and emulsion.

My process involves careful layering of specific pared-down materials, each chosen for it’s surface characteristic: polished plaster and graphite yield an oblique soft luster. The matte density of black gesso provides palpable weight. Pooled wax creates the dizzying effect of looking through a lens. Besides careful attention to surface, I exaggerate scale, reduce forms and heighten tonal nuance to generate a lag in immediately perceptible information.
