Artist Statement
I often derive my inspiration from an inherent abstraction found in natural and modern forms. My work draws a line between abstract and referential content as I maintain a minimal amount of ambiguous information. This reductive aesthetic lends itself to both personal and universal references; a quality I find is lost upon being elaborated. I have developed a focus in defining an abstract structure that invokes multiple associations. This structure lays the groundwork for a contemplative dialogue, leaving the viewer to ponder the connections mined from the subconscious. I hope for an escapist relationship to build.

I have developed a strong interest in the mark. There is a timeless honesty and purity in its primitivism. The freedom found in its simplicity and the authenticity in its individuality is a guiding influence in my work. These traits are seemingly overlooked when the mark is used as tools of language or illustration. Isolated, the mark stands alone, in effect creating abstract movement and space. Through my work, I seek to bring notions of representation to a stage where the mark’s abstract qualities are just as evident. When working through a piece, preserving rudimentary use of the mark is essential.

My techniques form a visual repetition, which elicit the meditative quality involved in my process and my aesthetic. Through repetition an unconscious pattern develops, forming organic structures and natural movement. I am attracted to an “otherness” and mystery in this pattern, suggesting an underlying and irreproducible ethereal code. By creating a framework to contain the repetition, I maintain a regimented mechanical process that generates tension between natural and modern systems of progression. This tension is a driving influence in my work.
