Artist Statement

The surface is not the full story. The membrane is porous. The skin I live in will shape, will hold shape, and will shape the who I am inside. But the surface is not the full story. And the membrane is porous.

My work destabilizes the notion of a fixed subjectivity by challenging the viewer to contend with an excess of representation. It is through this excess—this excess of boundary, of surface, of identity, of gender, of relationship—that legibility breaks down and is transformed into ambiguity. Unlike vagueness, which results from a lack of information, ambiguity results from an excess of information. It is therefore from the limits of representation that ambiguity can emerge and where the potentiality lies to make porous and mutable that which has heretofore appeared absolute, resolute and neutral.

I implore the viewer to consider the multiple limbs, faces, and hands in the works as belonging to a single individual moving through time and space. The interaction that I capture in these works then is the threshold between our internalized sense of self and our social world. Throughout these works, there is a multiplication of edge, reinscribed in the contour lines that delineate the figure. The repetition of frame and the inscription of the rectangle present an analogy between the edge of the picture and the edge of the body. But just as the edge of the canvases within these pictures are trompe l'oeil, are illusory, so too are the boundaries that demarcate one’s self.

And the surface is not the full story. And the membrane is porous.
