Artist Statement

Years ago I walked the beaches of Cape Cod and was impressed by the patterns left in the sand by waves pulled out to sea.  These observations led to small-scale line drawings.  In the last couple of years I have expanded those observations with large scale drawings focusing not on the pattern left in the sand, but of the swells further out at sea.

I have titled these works "Sea States".  Sea state refers to the surface of a large body of water with respect to wind and swell at any given moment.  Sea states are studied in order to inform mariners of what they might expect before entering into a particular area of the ocean.  Andrey Markov developed a model that is commonly used to generate time histories of sea state processes.  His mathematical model essentially maps a random evolution of a memoryless system.  It is a model for which the likelihood of a given future state, at any given moment, depends only on its present state and not on any past states.

The notion of a "memoryless system" fascinates.  It fits into our notions of the sea as the archetypal unknown, a transitional place lying between old worlds and new, as between there and here.
