Artist Statement

Although I consider myself a photorealist, I don’t think my work falls into a traditional photorealist category. I enjoy the distortions that occur with photography, but mostly I appreciate that photos allow me to look as deeply and as long as I want. I love honing my craft. I love spending hours and hours with a piece both for the deeper understanding that comes with long study and the meditative quality of the experience. But unlike the traditional photorealists, my work is always about a larger concept. My subjects are always an exploration of the experience of being a woman both in the larger social context and personally as a wife and mother. Gender identity, sexuality, the ramifications of being subjected to the male gaze, and motherhood’s anxieties surface over and over. In this portfolio, I’ve included images from a series entitled “The Hazards of Love” which addresses child mortality. It shows full body shots and portraits of three dead fawns which are substitutes for human children, something that addresses the morbidity without distressing people to the point of not engaging with the work. Their lingering beauty invites people to come closer despite the fact that they are obviously dead. While I was working on this series, it began to take on a life of it’s own as women began telling me about their own experiences of having children die, a subject not easily brought up. It was both painful and a relief to be able to share this incredibly important part of their life with someone else. Not ever speaking about the lost child negated their existence, and no parent wants to forget their child. Two of the fawns are named in memoriam for these children.

Most of the rest of the works address that complicated dance of attraction between men and women. The good, the bad and the ugly are examined with equal affection and sympathy.
