The drawn world that I create is one of fantasy and absurdity. I use observations from my everyday life and memories as departing points. I draw spaces that have unreal and multiple perspectives. They are scenes, abstract compositions, still lives and landscapes, in which either figuration or abstraction dominates. The line between the two is often difficult to distinguish.
Recurring elements in my work are mountains, clouds, animal like creatures and organic and geometrical forms. For me the mountains and clouds I create have to do with hope and desire, and the organic and geometrical forms provide a formal structure within an image.
The various figures in my work have an independent position and are one with the landscape. They are trying to approach each other, but in spite of their desire to connect they remain helpless and alone. The tension between failing of inter-relationships and the harmony between the figures and the landscape, characterizes my work and creates a range of atmospheres. An extra layer of tension is created, by using different techniques and materials in one drawing. The intense colors and strong contrasts that I use, do produce a formal aesthetic, but are also creating a feeling of estrangement.
When drawing, I begin by juxtaposing layers, and allowing forms to arise in this way. I explore the materials and let the possibilities surprise me. Initially the hand I’m drawing with is searching, but finishes with a goal. While I’m working, I search for the logic of the drawing, in this process I always think of form and space. I look for direction and significance. I want to reveal the unity of my searching and discovering. For me a drawing is successful when the work has a strong atmosphere and still has a fresh feeling to it.
