ABOUT THE ARTIST

Yuri Masnyj is best known for austerely rendered graphite and watercolor drawings of elaborate fictive worlds comprising art historical images and objects, books, and interiors. Masnyj's drawings and sculptures include recurring motifs culled from modernist iconography, Russian Constructivism, and a personal vocabulary of ordinary objects and symbols. Using a limited color palette and an isometric perspective, Masnyj humorously comments on 20th-century art history.

Born in Washington, DC in 1976, Masnyj presently lives and works in New York City. His work has been shown throughout the United States and Europe in solo and group exhibitions including Anxiety Times (solo exhibition), Sutton Lane, London, UK (2008), The Night's Still Young (solo exhibition), Metro Pictures, New York, NY (2007), the Whitney Biennial 2006, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2006), and Greater New York, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY (2005). In 2005, Masnyj's work was included in Vitamin D: New Perspectives in Drawing published by Phaidon Press.
